The full comparison
Countdown timers are one of the oldest tactics on Shopify, and one of the most crowded app categories. The big names have thousands of reviews. Below them sits a second tier of younger apps that are free, well rated and actively maintained, but that almost nobody has written about. VR Urgency Countdown Timer Bar and Countdown Timer Bar Samita are two of them. Both launched in 2024, both carry the Built for Shopify badge, both are listed as free, and both promise the same thing: put a ticking clock, a low stock message and a promo banner on your store without touching theme code.
This page compares them using only what each developer publishes: the App Store listings, the Vairo website and help center, and the Samita documentation. Where a detail is not published, we say so instead of guessing. If you are still deciding whether a timer belongs on your store at all, start with our take on whether countdown timers still work in 2026.
Who makes these two apps
VR Urgency Countdown Timer Bar (Vairo)
VR Urgency Countdown Timer Bar is published by Vairo, a developer listed in Livermore, California. The app went live on the Shopify App Store on July 12, 2024. At the time of writing it shows a 4.9 rating from about 96 reviews. Its listing positions it as an all in one urgency toolkit built around three things: countdown timers, stock countdowns and add to cart animations. The Vairo website claims more than 3,500 stores use it; that is the developer's own figure and we could not verify it.
What the listing does not tell you is that Vairo's help center documents a much broader set of storefront tools. Its tutorial section has 25 guides, including a sticky add to cart, trust badges on product and cart pages, payment badges, a free shipping bar, a spending goal tracker, a sales pop-up, product labels, a size chart, a GDPR cookie banner, order limits and content protection. Those modules are documented by the developer but not described on the App Store page, so we treat them as documented but not listed throughout this comparison.
Countdown Timer Bar Samita
Countdown Timer Bar Samita is made by SamiSales by Samita, a developer based in Hanoi, Vietnam, which publishes several other Shopify apps under the Samita name. It launched on September 16, 2024, two months after Vairo, and already shows about 192 reviews with a 5.0 rating. The listing is focused on one job: urgency. It covers countdown bars, product and cart timers, stock countdowns, estimated delivery timers, promotional banners and a sale pop-up.
Samita's documentation is the more detailed of the two. It explains how each timer behaves, what happens when the clock hits zero, how cart timers treat the cart, and how translations work. For an app this young, that level of documentation is a good sign.
Timer types and timing options
Both apps let you run a sitewide countdown bar plus timers on product pages and the cart page. The real difference is how much control you get over when a timer runs.
Vairo lists six timing options: recurring, reset per visit, fixed minute, one-time, session-based and timed session. That covers the classic evergreen timer, where each visitor gets their own countdown, and a repeating daily deal.
Samita lists nine: recurring, scheduled, date range, event-based, reset per visit, fixed end date, fixed minute, one-time and session-based. The two that matter most in practice are scheduled and date range. They let you prepare a Black Friday or end of season campaign in advance and let it switch itself on and off. Samita's docs also describe a daily recurring mode tied to set weekdays and hours, running on the shopper's local clock.
Samita also documents what a timer does when it reaches zero: it can stay at zero, hide, or restart. Its FAQ is clear that the app never changes prices, inventory or the add to cart button when time runs out. Vairo's listing and FAQ do not document end of timer behavior, so test it on a draft theme before you rely on it.
Winner on timing: Samita, mainly because scheduled and date range campaigns are listed and documented.
Where the timers can appear
Vairo lists more placements: sticky banner, pop-ups, cart page, checkout page, landing pages and product pages. The checkout mention stands out. It is on the listing, but what any app can show inside Shopify checkout depends on your Shopify plan and checkout setup, so verify it on your own store before planning a campaign around it.
Samita lists product pages, cart pages and landing pages, plus a banner bar at the top or bottom of every page. On product pages its only automatic position is directly below the add to cart button. Anywhere else, you paste a shortcode into a Samita Countdown block. That is slightly more manual, but one countdown can then show in several places, and changing its end date updates all of them at once.
Vairo also lists compatibility with three page builders: PageFly, GemPages and EComposer. Samita lists only Shopify Admin under works with. If your landing pages are built in one of those builders, Vairo has the clearer story.
Winner on placement: Vairo, for the wider list of display spots and named page builder support.
Beyond the timer: stock, delivery and pop-ups
This is where the two apps take different directions.
Both have a stock countdown. Samita's FAQ adds a useful detail: stock numbers come either from Shopify inventory or from an Estimated Quantity mode, and a product above your threshold simply shows nothing. Our guide to low stock alerts explains why real numbers usually beat invented ones.
Samita adds an estimated delivery date block, which shows an order cut-off and a delivery date range on product pages, with an order progress bar. It is calculated from your dispatch and delivery ranges, working days, holidays and cut-off time, not from live carrier data. For stores that sell on speed, an order within 2 hours to get it by Friday message is often more useful than a sale timer. Vairo's listing does not mention delivery estimates.
Samita also has a cart countdown that tells shoppers their items are held for a set number of minutes. Its FAQ is honest that this does not reserve stock and only clears the cart if you pick that expiry action; the default keeps the cart. Vairo lists cart page timers too, but does not document reservation or expiry behavior.
For social proof, Samita lists a sale pop-up showing recent purchases right on its listing. Vairo documents a sales pop-up in its help center but not on the listing.
Vairo's unique listed feature is the add to cart animation, an animated effect when shoppers add a product. Samita does not list anything similar.
Winner: it depends on your goal. Samita for delivery and cart urgency, Vairo if you want animations and a wider toolkit in one install.
Design and customization
Vairo lists customization of text, colors, timing and animations, plus emojis, links and buttons, sticky display and mobile responsive layouts. Samita lists custom CSS, colors and fonts, custom text, custom position and animations, and its banner bar can include a button or a copyable discount code.
The deciding point is custom CSS. Samita lists it, Vairo does not. If you want the bar to match a strict brand guide down to the letter spacing, Samita gives you that last mile.
Languages
Both support multi-language storefronts. Samita's docs explain that you write separate countdown text for each published store language, while timing, conditions and design stay shared. Vairo lists multi-language and region-specific urgency messages, without more detail.
The admin is a clearer difference. Vairo's listing shows English only. Samita's admin is available in 19 languages, including French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and Japanese. If your team prefers working in a language other than English, that counts.
Pricing
Both apps show Free as their price on the App Store, with no paid tier listed when we checked. There is one nuance. Samita's FAQ says countdown limits depend on your plan and that an error banner appears when you hit the cap, yet no plan with a higher limit is shown on the listing. Vairo publishes no limits at all. In both cases, expect the developer to introduce paid tiers or caps at some point, and check the listing before you build a large campaign on either app. Our article on free vs paid Shopify apps covers what to watch for with free tools.
Performance and theme requirements
Neither developer publishes speed benchmarks, so we cannot compare load impact with numbers. Both rely on a Shopify app embed that you switch on in the theme editor. Samita's embed is set per theme: a new theme starts with it off, while a duplicated theme keeps it. Vairo states it only supports Online Store 2.0 themes, so older vintage themes are out.
Vairo's breadth cuts both ways. Turning on ten of its modules means more scripts on your storefront. If you only need a timer, enable only the timer. Our piece on app bloat and site speed explains how to measure the impact.
Three stores, three choices
A fashion label running scheduled drops
A clothing brand launches a capsule every month on a set date and runs a 48 hour sale at the end of each season. It needs timers that switch on and off by themselves, a banner with a copyable code, and a delivery estimate to reassure buyers. Samita fits: scheduled and date range timers, a banner bar with a code and an estimated delivery block are all on its listing and documented.
A one product store built in PageFly
A store sells a single hero product from a PageFly landing page. It wants an evergreen timer, a stock counter, a sticky add to cart and an add to cart animation, without stacking five apps. Vairo fits: PageFly compatibility is listed, the evergreen modes are there, and the help center documents a sticky add to cart next to the urgency tools. If the sticky bar matters most, also look at our sticky add to cart comparison.
A small gift shop that ships fast
A gift shop with same day dispatch wants one message on product pages: order before 2 pm, receive it tomorrow. The timer itself is secondary. Samita fits again, because its estimated delivery block with working days, holidays and cut-off time is exactly that use case. If you also want a progress message toward free delivery, see our free shipping bar comparison.
Switching from one app to the other
Because both apps are free and both work through an app embed, switching is low risk.
- Write down every active timer: text, timing mode, end date, pages and conditions.
- Install the new app and rebuild the timers there. If you move from Samita to Vairo, check that each scheduled campaign has an equivalent, since scheduled and date range modes are not listed by Vairo.
- Turn on the new app embed on a duplicated theme and preview it.
- Turn off the old app embed, then uninstall the old app. On Samita, remove any Samita Countdown blocks you placed with shortcodes so they do not leave empty space.
- Test fixed minute timers in a private window, since both apps keep per visitor timers in the browser.
Plan the switch outside a live campaign. Changing fixed minute settings restarts every visitor's timer, as Samita's FAQ notes, and moving to a new app has the same effect.
What we could not verify
- Neither app publishes paid plans or detailed limits on its listing.
- Vairo's extra modules (sticky add to cart, trust badges, free shipping bar and others) are documented in its help center but not on the App Store page.
- Vairo's checkout display is listed, but checkout customization depends on your Shopify plan.
- Neither developer publishes performance data.

Frequently asked questions
For scheduled sales, yes. Samita lists scheduled, date range and event-based timers, so you can prepare a Black Friday or seasonal sale in advance and let it start and stop on its own. Vairo lists recurring, per visit, fixed minute, one-time and session modes, but scheduled campaigns are not listed on its App Store page.
Yes. Its Shopify App Store listing shows the app as Free, and neither the listing nor vairo.app publishes a paid plan or usage limits at the time of checking. Check the listing again before a big campaign, since free apps sometimes add paid tiers later.
The App Store listing shows Free as the only price. Samita's FAQ adds that countdown limits depend on your plan and that an error banner appears when you reach the cap, but the listing does not name the cap or show a paid plan.
Vairo is a US developer based in Livermore, California. Its app launched in July 2024, carries the Built for Shopify badge and shows a 4.9 rating from about 96 reviews. It has a public help center with 25 setup tutorials and a demo store.
VR Urgency Countdown Timer Bar names PageFly, GemPages and EComposer as compatible on its listing. Countdown Timer Bar Samita lists only Shopify Admin, though its shortcode can place a timer in other theme areas.
Samita's FAQ says its cart countdown does not reserve stock and only clears the cart if you choose that expiry action. Vairo lists cart page timers but does not document any reservation or expiry behavior, so treat both as visual urgency only.
Both apps list multi-language support. Samita documents separate countdown text per published store language with shared timing and design, and its admin comes in 19 languages. Vairo lists multi-language and region-specific messages with an English admin.
