Essential Free Shipping Bar vs Hoppy: which free shipping bar fits your Shopify store?

Essential Free Shipping Bar5.0(975 reviews)Hoppy Free Shipping Bar4.8(271 reviews)

Short answer

Hoppy Free Shipping Bar is the better pick for most stores that want a free shipping bar inside the cart drawer without paying: it is listed as free, covers the cart drawer, cart page, product page and top bar, and applies free shipping, discounts or free gifts automatically. Essential Free Shipping Bar is the safer choice if you value track record (5.0 stars from nearly 1,000 reviews since 2022) or only need a top bar and product page bar, which its free plan covers up to 1,000 views a month; cart drawer placement starts at $14.99/month.

The full comparison

A free shipping progress bar is one of the cheapest conversion tools a Shopify store can add. It tells shoppers how far they are from a threshold, and it nudges them to add one more item instead of abandoning the cart over a shipping fee. Dozens of apps do this, but two of them come up again and again when merchants shortlist a dedicated option: Essential Free Shipping Bar by Essential Apps and Free Shipping Bar Cart Upsell by Hoppy Apps, which we call Hoppy Free Shipping Bar on this page.

On paper they look alike. Both show a progress bar on the product page, in the cart and at the top of the store. Both add upsell products to the bar. Both have a free option. In practice they are built on opposite business models, and that changes which one makes sense for your store. Essential sells a metered product with four tiers. Hoppy lists its whole app as free. This comparison goes through the differences that actually matter once the bar is live.

Essential Free Shipping Bar in context

Essential Apps launched this app on the Shopify App Store on June 3, 2022. It sits in a family of single-purpose apps from the same developer (cart drawer, trust badges, announcement bar, free gifts), and it shows: the app focuses on one job and does it with very little friction. The listing shows a 5.0 rating from close to 1,000 reviews, which is one of the strongest review profiles in the free shipping bar category.

The app calls each bar a “booster”. You pick one of six pre-made styles or design your own, set a goal amount, and choose where the booster appears. Pricing is based on monthly booster views, and some placements and features unlock only on higher plans. That last point is the one to read carefully, because it decides whether the free plan is enough for you.

Hoppy Free Shipping Bar in context

Hoppy Apps is a US developer (Newark, Delaware) with several Shopify apps. Its free shipping app launched on February 24, 2025, so it is much younger than Essential. Despite that, it already carries the Built for Shopify badge, which Shopify only grants to apps that meet its performance, design and integration standards. On the day we checked, the listing showed a 4.8 rating from 271 reviews.

Hoppy goes further than a plain progress bar. Its goals can unlock free shipping, a percentage discount, a fixed discount or a free gift, and it creates the matching Shopify discount for you. It also ships with targeting rules that you usually only find in paid apps. And the App Store listing prices all of it as “Free”, with no paid tier shown.

Pricing: a metered ladder versus a free listing

Essential Free Shipping Bar has four plans, billed in US dollars every 30 days:

  • Free: up to 1,000 booster views per month, unlimited top bar boosters and unlimited product page boosters.
  • Starter, $9.99/month: up to 10,000 views, plus geolocation targeting and product exclusions.
  • Essential, $14.99/month: up to 50,000 views, plus unlimited cart page boosters, upsell products and analytics.
  • Professional, $29.99/month: unlimited views and all premium features.

Paid plans come with a 7-day free trial. Essential's documentation explains that a view is counted every time the widget loads, not per unique visitor, so one shopper browsing five product pages can use five views. If you go over your quota you are not charged extra: you get an email, and if you do not upgrade within three days the boosters are unpublished until the counter resets on the first of the month. That is a fair system, but 1,000 views a month disappears quickly on a store with real traffic.

Hoppy Free Shipping Bar is listed as Free on the App Store, and Hoppy's own product page says the app is “free to use”. We found no paid plan, no view quota and no feature gate in the listing or the help center. The honest caveat: a free app with no visible revenue model can change its pricing later, and the listing does not promise that it will stay free forever. For now, though, Hoppy wins on price by a wide margin.

Placements: where the bar can actually appear

This is the most important practical difference between the two apps.

Both apps support four placements: a top banner, the product page, the cart page and the cart drawer. With Hoppy, all four are available at no cost, and you can enable the progress bar and the upsell widget separately on each placement (the banner placement only shows the bar, not the upsell widget).

With Essential, the free plan covers the top bar and product page. Its documentation states that the Cart Page and Cart Drawer booster types are not available on the free plan and need the Essential or Professional plan. In other words, if you want the bar inside your slide cart, the real starting price for Essential is $14.99 per month. Essential's docs also note that some themes with custom cart drawers do not detect the booster automatically, in which case you paste a small snippet into the drawer file or ask support to do it.

If the cart drawer is where you want the nudge to happen (and for most stores it is the moment that matters most), Hoppy gives you that for free while Essential asks for a mid-tier plan.

How the reward is applied

The two apps handle the actual free shipping very differently.

Essential does not touch your shipping settings. Its help center tells you to create a conditional shipping rate in Shopify, based on order price, with your threshold as the minimum and a price of zero, and to repeat that for every market. The bar then shows progress toward a threshold that Shopify enforces natively. The advantage is that nothing in your discount stack changes. The drawback is that the bar and the shipping rate are configured in two places, so you have to keep both amounts in sync yourself.

Hoppy creates a discount in Shopify Discounts when you set a reward, and a discount label appears in the cart and at checkout once the reward is unlocked. You can also choose whether the reward combines with other discounts, and whether all unlocked rewards apply or only the last one. This is more automatic, but it means the app adds a discount to your store, which you will want to check against any other discount apps you run.

Goals, tiers and rewards

Hoppy is clearly ahead here. Its goal-based setup lets you stack several milestones (the help center example uses $100, $200 and $300) and attach a different reward to each: free shipping, a percentage off, a fixed amount off or a free gift that is added to the cart automatically. Goals can be based on cart value or on product quantity, with an option to count only unique products, and you can include or exclude products and collections from the calculation. You can even exclude specific shipping methods from the free shipping reward, which protects your margin on express options.

Essential's listing describes cart goals that unlock free shipping, a discount code or another reward, and its feature tags mention free gifts. We did not find documentation for multi-tier milestones or quantity-based goals, so on those two points we mark Essential as partial or not listed rather than guess.

Targeting and international stores

For a single-currency store, targeting is a nice-to-have. For a store selling into several countries, it decides whether the bar shows the right threshold.

Hoppy reads the markets you set up in Shopify and lets you enable different goal settings for each market inside the same bar: goal amount, reward, messages and cart-empty text. Its targeting options also include customer tags, lifetime spend, order history, time on site, UTM sources (for example, show a specific bar only to visitors from a paid social campaign), and start and end dates.

Essential handles countries by duplicating a booster for each market, changing its goal amount and currency, translating its text and assigning the countries that should see it. It works, but geolocation targeting starts on the Starter plan at $9.99 per month, and you end up managing several boosters instead of one. Customer, UTM and scheduling rules are not listed on Essential's App Store page.

On languages, Essential's app is available in 19 languages and Hoppy's in 13, and both let you translate the storefront messages.

Upsells inside the bar

Both apps pair the progress bar with product suggestions, since the whole point is to help the shopper close the gap.

Hoppy's upsell widget can show AI recommendations (driven by Shopify's Search & Discovery app), specific products, products from chosen collections or the product being viewed, with rotation, custom titles and a cap on the number of products.

Essential adds upsell products on the Essential plan ($14.99 per month) and above. Below that tier, the bar shows progress only.

Analytics

Hoppy's analytics show views, items added through the upsell widget, upsell revenue, goals reached, free gifts given and free shipping applied, filterable by campaign and date range. Essential includes analytics from the Essential plan, and its listing mentions click-through rates, conversion rates and funnel performance. If you stay on Essential's free or Starter plan, you do not get the analytics.

Track record, reviews and support

This is where Essential earns its place. It has been on the App Store since 2022, it holds a 5.0 rating from close to 1,000 reviews, and the developer runs a whole suite of apps with a dedicated documentation site. If you value predictability and a long history of merchants vouching for the app, Essential is the safer bet.

Hoppy's 4.8 from 271 reviews is excellent for an app that is under two years old, and recent reviews often praise fast support and an easy setup. It also has a handful of one-star reviews, including one describing prices displayed incorrectly. Its Built for Shopify badge is a strong signal on quality and speed. Still, it has less history, and a free app is a different bet from a paid one.

Three store profiles

A new apparel store on a tight budget

You launched three months ago, you get a few thousand sessions a month and every dollar of app spend counts. You want the bar inside the cart drawer, where shoppers decide. Hoppy is the obvious fit: all placements, automatic free shipping and a free gift at a second threshold, at no cost. Essential's free plan would cap you at 1,000 views and would not cover the drawer.

An established beauty brand selling in three markets

You sell in the US, the UK and the EU, each with its own free shipping threshold. Hoppy's per-market goals inside one bar are easier to maintain than three duplicated boosters, and the UTM targeting helps you show a lower threshold to visitors from a specific campaign. If your team prefers a paid app with a longer track record and is fine maintaining one booster per country, Essential's Starter plan handles geolocation for $9.99 per month, but you need the $14.99 plan to put those boosters in the cart.

A home goods store that only wants a top bar

You do not care about the drawer: you just want a clean “Spend $40 more for free shipping” line at the top of every page and on product pages, and your traffic is modest. Essential's free plan does exactly that, with unlimited top bar and product page boosters and six ready styles, from a developer with years of five-star reviews. As long as you stay under 1,000 widget loads a month, you pay nothing.

Migrating from one app to the other

From Essential to Hoppy

  1. Note your current threshold, messages and colors in Essential.
  2. Install Hoppy and recreate the goal. If you want Hoppy to apply free shipping, choose the Free Shipping reward and decide what to do with the zero-rate shipping rule you created in Shopify for Essential: keeping both with different amounts will confuse shoppers.
  3. Enable the placements you need and check the cart drawer on mobile.
  4. Uninstall Essential and cancel any paid plan from the app so you are not billed for the next cycle.

From Hoppy to Essential

  1. Choose a plan that covers your placements: cart page and drawer need the Essential plan or higher.
  2. Create a conditional free shipping rate in Shopify for each market, since Essential does not apply the reward itself.
  3. Rebuild the booster, then remove the discount Hoppy created in Shopify Discounts so customers do not get two overlapping rewards.
  4. Uninstall Hoppy and test a full checkout below and above the threshold.

A third option: ConvertX

If you are also shopping for a cart drawer, upsells or bundles, an all-in-one app can replace a stand-alone bar. ConvertX includes a free shipping progress bar inside its cart drawer module, alongside a timer, product recommendations, shipping protection, a discount code field and payment icons. Plans start at $19.99 per month (Essential, up to 4 active modules) or $34.99 per month (Premium, unlimited), with a 7-day trial and no free plan. It launched in September 2025, has only a few reviews so far and does not carry the Built for Shopify badge, so if all you need is a free shipping bar, Hoppy or Essential is the simpler and cheaper choice. It mostly makes sense when it replaces several apps at once. Our Kaching Cart Drawer vs Essential Cart Drawer comparison covers the cart drawer side in more detail.

How we checked

We read both App Store listings, Essential's documentation on view counting, cart drawer placement, shipping settings and geolocation, and Hoppy's help center articles on goals, targeting, markets and analytics, on October 16, 2026. Ratings and review counts move every week, and both developers can change their plans at any time, so check the listing before you install.
