The full comparison

If you sell a t-shirt in eight colors, Shopify gives you two ways to set it up. You can create one product with eight color variants, or eight separate products that each have their own page, photos, title and URL. The second approach is better for SEO and for collection pages, but out of the box Shopify does not link those eight products together: shoppers land on the red one and have no idea the navy one exists. Native Combined Listings fixes this, but only for Shopify Plus stores and only with a specific product structure.

That gap is exactly what Grouptify Combined Listings and Platmart Color Swatches fill. Both link separate products into one group and show them as clickable swatches, so the eight t-shirts behave like one product on the storefront while staying eight products in your admin. Neither app is a household name: you will not find them in most "top 10 Shopify apps" lists, and almost nothing has been written comparing them directly. This page is our attempt to fix that, using only what each developer publishes on its App Store listing, pricing page and documentation (checked on October 20, 2026).

Who makes each app

Grouptify Combined Listings

The App Store name is "G: Combined Listings & Variant". It is published by Grouptify, a team based in Hanoi, Vietnam, and linked to Tapita, which hosts its pricing page, FAQ and help center. The app launched on October 11, 2024, which makes it the younger of the two. Despite that, it has collected about 450 reviews with a 5.0 average (98% five stars and two one-star reviews at the time of writing), and it carries the Built for Shopify badge.

Grouptify's pitch is broader than swatches. It groups sibling products, but it also redesigns variant selectors inside a single product, splits existing variants into standalone products with their own URLs, and says it gets around Shopify's 100-variant limit. On Shopify Plus, it can also create native Combined Listings parent products.

Platmart Color Swatches

Platmart is an independent studio in Barcelona, Spain, operating since 2021. Its swatch app launched on September 23, 2021, so it has three more years of production use behind it. It shows 143 reviews, also averaging 5.0 (140 five-star, one one-star), and also holds the Built for Shopify badge. Platmart says the app was selected among the top 25 Built for Shopify apps of 2025.

Platmart sticks to one job and goes deep on it. It handles two cases: "product groups" for separate products that differ by color, and "variant swatches" that replace dropdowns inside a single product. Its documentation is unusually detailed for an app this size, covering accessibility, headless use, group limits and what happens when you move stores.

Pricing: the biggest real difference

This is where the two apps part ways, and it decides the choice for many stores.

Grouptify has a free Starter plan available to any live store, capped at 3 product groups with manual grouping, 6 selector styles and manual product sync. Everything else sits in a single "Unlimited" plan, whose price depends on your Shopify plan, not on how many groups you create:

No app-specific free trial is listed, and yearly billing gives you two months free.

Platmart does the opposite: the price follows the number of product groups you need, and it does not change with your Shopify plan. The free plan is reserved for development, partner and staff stores, so a live store pays from day one after a 14-day free trial:

What this means in practice:

  • Shopify Basic, under 100 groups: Platmart costs $9.99, Grouptify $14.90.
  • Shopify Basic, 300 groups: Grouptify $14.90, Platmart $24.99 (Advanced).
  • Shopify Grow, 300 groups: Platmart $24.99, Grouptify $29.90.
  • Shopify Grow, 1,000 groups: Grouptify $29.90, Platmart $49.99.
  • Shopify Plus, up to 5,000 groups: Platmart $49.99, Grouptify $99.90.
  • Testing on a live store for free: only Grouptify allows it, with 3 groups.

So Grouptify wins on big catalogs running on lower Shopify plans, and on the free entry point. Platmart wins for most small catalogs and clearly on Shopify Plus. If you are still deciding whether a paid app is worth it at all, our guide on free vs paid Shopify apps gives a simple way to reason about it.

Grouping products

Both apps let you build groups by hand, which is fine for a dozen products and painful for a thousand.

Grouptify automates grouping by title pattern, tag or metafield on the Unlimited plan, and it can automatically add new products to existing groups. Title patterns are handy when your products are already named "Linen Shirt / Sage", "Linen Shirt / Sand" and so on: the app reads the pattern and does the grouping for you.

Platmart automates through collections and metafields on the Advanced plan and above. Title-pattern matching is not listed on its pages. Platmart also documents its limits plainly: 100 products per group by default (support can raise it to 300 or more), 50 products per manual entry, and a product can sit in up to 3 groups.

Both offer CSV import and export (Grouptify on Unlimited, Platmart from Standard) and an API for managing groups (Grouptify on Unlimited, Platmart on Premium only).

Edge: Grouptify, for title-based automation available at a lower price point.

Variant swatches inside a single product

Not every product is split into separate listings. Sometimes you just want the size and color dropdowns of one product to become buttons and color circles.

Platmart covers this with "variant swatches", unlimited on all paid plans, and six swatch types: solid color, two-tone, custom image, product thumbnail, image with text and text button. Size, shape, spacing and tooltips are adjustable, and there is a custom CSS field.

Grouptify offers 6 selector styles on the free plan and "10+" on Unlimited, including color swatches, image swatches and dropdowns, plus custom CSS. The listing does not break down every style the way Platmart does.

Edge: close to a tie. Platmart documents its swatch types more precisely; Grouptify advertises more styles.

Splitting variants into separate products

This is a feature only Grouptify lists. If your catalog was built the "one product, many variants" way and you now want separate pages for each color (for SEO, ads or cleaner collection pages), Grouptify can split those variants into standalone products, each keeping its own URL, title and images, then group them again with swatches.

Platmart assumes your products already exist as separate listings or stay as variants. It does not list a split tool.

Edge: Grouptify, clearly, for stores restructuring an existing catalog.

Collection pages and product cards

Showing swatches on collection pages lets shoppers see that a product comes in other colors before clicking through, which is often where the conversion gain comes from.

Platmart shows swatches on collection and search pages, and its plan table does not reserve this for a higher tier. Grouptify shows options on product cards only on Unlimited; the free plan is limited to the product page. Grouptify's FAQ also notes that grouped products still appear individually in collection and search results, because they remain separate products.

Edge: Platmart, slightly, because collection swatches are available from its cheapest paid plan regardless of your Shopify plan.

Out-of-stock handling

Platmart gives you three choices for a sold-out swatch (cross it out, hide it, or keep it clickable) and can push out-of-stock swatches to the end of the list. Draft and archived products are hidden automatically.

Grouptify syncs inventory in real time when auto-resync is on, so a sold-out product shows as out of stock and comes back when restocked. Hiding draft and archived products is part of Unlimited. Specific display options such as crossing out or reordering are not listed on its pages.

Edge: Platmart.

Shopify Plus and native Combined Listings

If you are on Shopify Plus and want Shopify's own Combined Listings (a real parent product), Grouptify supports it on the Unlimited plan. Platmart lists "Combined Listings" in its compatible apps and features, but its own product page positions metafield-based product groups as a more flexible alternative to the native feature rather than a way to manage it.

Edge: Grouptify for Plus stores that specifically want native combined listings.

International stores, headless and accessibility

  • Markets and translations: Platmart localizes swatch names and option labels for languages and Shopify Markets on Advanced and above. Grouptify includes multi-language support on both plans and can hide grouped products by market on Unlimited.
  • Headless: Platmart says headless storefronts work if you build your own swatch interface from the group data stored in public metafields. Grouptify does not mention headless.
  • Admin language: Grouptify's app is available in 9 languages, including French, German and Spanish. Platmart lists English only.
  • Accessibility: Platmart documents keyboard support, screen reader labels and the WCAG 2.1 AA practices its widgets follow. Grouptify does not publish an equivalent page.

Speed

Every storefront app adds code, so it is worth asking how much. Platmart says swatches load after the page renders and that images are served from Shopify's CDN, and its FAQ adds that uninstalling leaves no theme code behind (groups are kept for 180 days). Grouptify's FAQ says it resizes uploaded swatch images automatically and recommends images of at least 200 px. Neither app publishes independent speed tests, so measure your own store before and after. Our articles on site speed and conversion and app bloat explain what to look at.

Support

Grouptify lists chat through its website widget, in-app support, email (support@tapita.io) and the option to book a call, with "VIP support" reserved for Unlimited. Platmart offers in-app live chat and email (color-swatches@platmart.io), with priority and developer support on Premium. Platmart's site highlights reviews praising fast replies, and both apps hold near-perfect ratings, so support quality is not a deciding factor between them.

Three store profiles

A new apparel store on Shopify Basic with 40 products

You sell linen shirts in five colors and want to see whether swatches help before paying. Start with Grouptify's free plan: 3 groups is enough to test your best sellers on a live store. If it works and you stay under 100 groups, compare costs honestly at that point: Platmart Standard at $9.99 becomes the cheaper paid option on Basic, and its 14-day trial lets you check it on your theme.

A home decor brand on Shopify Grow with 600 grouped products

You have cushions, throws and vases in many finishes, and new items arrive every week. Platmart would need its Advanced plan ($24.99, 500 groups) or Premium ($49.99) once you pass 500 groups. Grouptify's Unlimited costs $29.90 on Grow with no group cap, and title-pattern grouping will catch new arrivals automatically. Grouptify is the more practical fit here.

A Shopify Plus fashion label selling in several countries

You run Markets, care about accessibility and might move to a headless front end. Platmart Premium costs $49.99 against $99.90 for Grouptify on Plus, documents its Markets, headless and accessibility behaviour, and gives you an API. Choose Grouptify instead only if native Shopify Combined Listings is a hard requirement for your team.

Switching from one app to the other

Moving between them is manageable because both keep your products as normal Shopify products. The work is in rebuilding the groups.

  1. Export your groups to CSV from the app you are leaving (Platmart on any paid plan, Grouptify on Unlimited).
  2. Install the new app on an unpublished copy of your theme if possible, and recreate groups by CSV or with automation rules.
  3. Reconfigure appearance settings and translations by hand. Platmart's FAQ is explicit that appearance, variant swatch settings and translations do not travel by CSV, and the same is safe to assume when importing into Grouptify.
  4. Check collection pages and out-of-stock behaviour on mobile before publishing.
  5. Uninstall the old app and check your theme for leftover blocks.

If you used Grouptify to split variants into separate products, those products stay in your store after you leave, so Platmart can group them right away.

While you are reworking product pages, it is a good moment to revisit your copy too: our guide on writing a product description that converts pairs well with a swatch rollout.

Bottom line

These are two well-rated, actively maintained apps solving the same problem with different philosophies. Grouptify is a broader variant toolkit with a free plan for live stores, variant splitting and native Combined Listings on Plus, priced by Shopify plan. Platmart is a focused swatch app with flat pricing by group count, stronger out-of-stock and accessibility documentation, and better value on Shopify Plus. Run your own numbers with the tables above: the right answer usually comes down to your Shopify plan and how many groups you need.
