Short answer

Essential Trust Badges and Conversion Bear Trust Badges are both free to start, but they serve different needs. Pick Conversion Bear Trust Badges if you want a fully free app with 300+ badges on the product page, cart page and footer and no view cap listed. Pick Essential Trust Badges (5.0 on 1,100+ reviews, Built for Shopify) if you need your own icons, badges in a theme cart drawer, geolocation or translations, knowing those sit on paid plans at $6.99 or $9.99 a month and the free plan stops at 5,000 views.

The full comparison

Where these two apps come from

Trust badges are one of the cheapest conversion fixes on Shopify: a row of payment logos under the buy button, a "30-day returns" seal, a "secure checkout" icon near the cart total. Because the job looks simple, most merchants end up choosing between free apps, and two names keep coming up in the Badges and icons category: Essential Trust Badges & Icons from Essential Apps, and Conversion Bear Trust Badges from Conversion Bear.

In search results they look interchangeable. They are not. Conversion Bear Trust Badges is one of the older apps in the category: its listing shows a launch date of July 31, 2019, an English-only admin, a 4.9 rating from around 380 reviews and a single free plan. Its pitch is a large library (300+ badge options), simple styling and a small footprint, which the developer puts at under 30kb.

Essential Trust Badges & Icons arrived much later, on June 2, 2023, and grew fast. When we checked it showed a 5.0 rating on more than 1,100 reviews and the Built for Shopify badge. It runs on a freemium model with four plans, from a free tier capped at 5,000 monthly views to a $29.99 Professional plan. The paid tiers unlock things Conversion Bear does not list at all: custom icon uploads, cart drawer placement, product tag rules, geolocation and translations.

So the useful question is not which app is better in general, but how much control you need over where badges appear and who sees them. Below we go criterion by criterion, with every price and feature checked on the App Store listings and the developers' documentation on October 13, 2026.

Badge library and design

What you can display

Conversion Bear advertises more than 300 badge options, payment icons included, and says it adds new badges "upon request quite often". You can keep each badge's original colors or switch to your brand colors, set alignment and size, and edit the message shown with the badges. Size can differ between desktop and mobile, which matters when a row of eight payment logos turns into specks on a phone. A GemPages help article about the app also mentions optional animations.

Essential Trust Badges has a broader idea of what a badge is. Beyond payment icons and guarantee seals, its listing covers product feature icons, promo banners, product labels, sale badges and discount badges. Its FAQ page mentions six pre-made banner styles, with control over icons, colors, type and layout. It does not give a number for its library, so we cannot say which one is bigger; Conversion Bear is the only one that publishes a figure.

Custom icons

This is the first clear split. Essential lets you upload your own icons or images, but only from the Starter plan at $6.99 a month. Conversion Bear does not list custom uploads on its App Store page; the closest option is asking the team to add a badge to the library. If your brand relies on a specific certification logo or a home-made "handmade in Portugal" seal, Essential is the safer bet.

Placement: product page, cart page and cart drawer

Both apps cover the product page, where most merchants start. After that they diverge.

Conversion Bear says badges can go on the product page, the cart page, the footer or a hero section, using a copy-paste step to drop them where you want. All of that is included in the free app. What it does not mention is a slide-out cart drawer, so if your theme uses a drawer instead of a cart page, test it on a duplicate theme before you rely on it.

Essential handles placement through its app embed plus an app block, and documents cart placement in detail. Two constraints are worth knowing before you install:

  • Cart page and cart drawer badges only render on the Essential ($9.99/month) and Professional plans. On Free or Starter, cart badges simply do not appear.
  • Drawer support covers theme-based drawers only. Essential's documentation says third-party cart drawer apps are not supported, and its custom position option works on the cart page but not inside the drawer.

Put simply: for a free badge row on the cart page, Conversion Bear wins. For a badge row inside your theme's own cart drawer, Essential is the one that documents it, on its $9.99 plan. If you are rethinking the drawer itself, our guide on customizing a Shopify cart drawer without code covers the options, and our Kaching Cart Drawer vs Essential Cart Drawer comparison looks at two drawer apps head to head.

Targeting and international stores

Conversion Bear treats badges as a global element: its listing does not mention per-product rules, tags or country targeting.

Essential goes much further. On every plan you pick which products show a badge from the Placement tab. From the Essential plan you can add blocks based on product tags, target visitors by country and translate badges. That lets a store show "Free returns within 30 days" to US shoppers and a different promise to UK visitors, or display a "vegan" icon only on products tagged vegan. The admin itself comes in 20 languages, against English only for Conversion Bear. A GemPages help article describes Conversion Bear as offering multi-language support, but this is not on its App Store listing, so we mark it as partial.

Pricing and the view cap

Conversion Bear Trust Badges is free, and its listing shows no paid plan and no monthly view limit. That is its strongest argument.

Essential's pricing is based on usage:

Paid plans come with a 7-day free trial and are billed in USD. The detail that catches merchants out is how views are counted: Essential's documentation says a view is counted every time the badge loads on a page. When you hit the cap you are not charged extra; you get an email, and if you do not upgrade within three days the badges are unpublished until the monthly reset. As a rough estimate, a store with 300 visitors a day who each open two product pages loads badges about 18,000 times a month, already well past the free tier. Run that math with your own analytics before assuming the free plan is enough. Our article on when paying for a Shopify app is worth it goes deeper into this kind of trade-off.

Speed, credibility and support

Conversion Bear describes its app as "ultra light", under 30kb. Essential does not publish a weight. If you are already fighting app bloat on your theme, Conversion Bear is the one with a stated number.

On the credibility of the app itself, Essential has the edge: the Built for Shopify badge, a 5.0 average on more than 1,100 reviews, and a public help center with articles on placement, translations, geolocation and troubleshooting. Conversion Bear has a strong 4.9 on around 380 reviews and almost four more years on the market, but the Built for Shopify badge is not shown on its listing. Its knowledge base link redirected to another domain when we checked, so we relied on the listing and a GemPages help article for details.

Page builder users get one specific point: GemPages documents a native "Trust Badge Bear" widget for Conversion Bear in GemPages V7. Essential lists Shopify Admin as its only integration.

Three stores, three answers

A new single-product store testing an offer

You sell one hero product, send TikTok traffic to the product page and get a few hundred sessions a day. You need payment logos and a money-back seal, nothing more. Conversion Bear Trust Badges is the obvious pick: free, no view cap listed, and it covers the product page and cart page at no cost. With Essential you would likely outgrow the 5,000 free views within days of a good ad. If you are still deciding on the guarantee itself, read whether money-back guarantee badges increase Shopify sales.

A growing apparel brand with a theme cart drawer

You use your theme's built-in drawer, sell 200 SKUs and want a "free exchanges" icon row inside the drawer, plus a different icon set on your organic cotton range. That is Essential territory: its $9.99 plan gives you drawer placement on theme-based drawers and tag-based rules for the organic products. Conversion Bear lists neither feature.

A store shipping to several countries

You ship to the US, Canada and the UK with different return windows and want each visitor to see the right promise. Essential's geolocation targeting and translations, both from the $9.99 plan, are built for that. With Conversion Bear, everyone sees the same badges. A clear return policy page matters as much as the badge pointing to it.

Switching from one to the other

From Conversion Bear to Essential

  1. Write down which badges you show and where: product page, cart page, footer.
  2. Install Essential, recreate the badges, then enable its app embed under Theme settings, Apps.
  3. If you want badges in the cart drawer, move to the Essential plan and confirm your drawer comes from the theme, not from another app.
  4. Remove the Conversion Bear code or section you pasted, then uninstall the app, so you do not end up with two badge rows.
  5. A week later, compare your monthly views with your plan's cap.

From Essential to Conversion Bear

  1. List the badges that depend on paid features: uploaded icons, geolocation, tag rules, translations. These will not carry over.
  2. Cancel the Essential subscription, disable its app embed and remove any Essential app blocks from your templates.
  3. Install Conversion Bear, pick the closest badges in its library and place them on the product page, cart page and footer.
  4. If one custom icon is a must, ask Conversion Bear whether it can add it to the library.

A third option

If trust badges are one item on a longer to-do list, ConvertX groups a Payment Icons module (payment logos under the buy button and in the cart) with bundles, upsells, a cart drawer that also shows payment icons, a sticky add to cart bar and product blocks for trust icons and badges. It is not a cheaper route to badges: there is no free plan outside development stores, and the Essential plan costs $19.99 a month ($143.88 a year) for up to 4 active modules and up to $1,000 of additional revenue a month, with Premium at $34.99 a month for unlimited use. It launched in September 2025, has few reviews so far and does not carry the Built for Shopify badge. It only makes sense if it replaces several paid apps at once; for badges alone, either app on this page fits better.

How we compare

We make ConvertX, so we have a side. We still try to be fair: every price and feature here comes from the apps’ own listings and docs (see sources), we say where another app is the better pick, and we update pages when apps change.
