How to Build a Holiday Gift Guide Page on Shopify That Sells

A step-by-step method to build a Shopify holiday gift guide page: collections by recipient and budget, a page template, shipping cutoffs, gift add-ons and the mistakes that kill conversions.

Shopify merchants sold $14.6 billion over Black Friday Cyber Monday 2025, up 27% on the year before, to more than 81 million customers. A big share of those people were not buying for themselves. They were buying for someone else, and they did not know what to pick.

That is the problem a gift guide solves. Not "browse our catalog". Instead: "here are 8 things your dad will like, under $50, delivered before the 24th".

This guide shows you how to build that page on Shopify, step by step, with native features and no developer.

Why a gift guide page beats a generic holiday collection

A "Holiday" collection with 140 products is a catalog with a red banner. A gift guide is a decision tool. The visitor shows up with a person in mind and a budget in their head, and leaves with one product in the cart.

Gift shoppers also discover differently now. In KPMG's 2025 holiday survey, 41% of US consumers said they use AI to research gifts, and one in three had bought something after seeing it on YouTube or Instagram. Both channels send people to a specific landing page. A clear, well-structured gift guide is exactly the kind of page those links (and AI answers) can point to.

The same survey says 52% of shoppers are more actively seeking promotions. So the guide has to make value obvious: price ranges up front, bundles, free shipping thresholds.

Step 1: Pick the structure (recipient, budget or both)

There are three ways to cut a gift guide. Pick one primary axis and one secondary.

Structure

Best for

Example sections

Watch out for

By recipient

Fashion, beauty, home, lifestyle

For her, For him, For kids, For the host

Too many personas dilutes each one

By budget

Stores with wide price spread

Under $25, Under $50, Under $100, Splurge

Feels cheap if the low tier is filler

By interest

Niche stores (coffee, outdoor, gaming)

For the home barista, For the camper

Only works if visitors self-identify

Recipient + budget

Catalogs above 100 SKUs

For him under $50

More collections to maintain

My recommendation for most stores: recipient first, budget as a filter inside each section. People think "what do I get my sister" before they think "what costs $40".

Keep it to 4 to 6 sections. Beyond that, the page turns back into a catalog.

Step 2: Create the collections behind each section

Every section of the guide should be a real Shopify collection. That way each block on the page is clickable, filterable and indexable on its own.

Use tags for recipient collections

  1. In your Shopify admin, tag the relevant products: gift-for-her, gift-for-him, gift-for-kids, gift-stocking-stuffer.
  2. Go to Products > Collections > Create collection.
  3. Choose Automated and set the condition "Product tag is equal to gift-for-her".
  4. Write a short, human description (2 or 3 sentences). This text also helps the page rank.

Use price conditions for budget collections

For "Gifts under $50", create an automated collection with the condition "Price is less than 50". Combine it with "Inventory stock is greater than 0" so sold-out items drop off by themselves in December.

Curate, do not dump

Eight to twelve products per section is plenty. Pick bestsellers, items with strong reviews, and products that look giftable in a photo. Drop anything with complicated sizing: a sweater in nine sizes is a returns risk when the buyer is guessing someone else's size.

Step 3: Build the gift guide page

You have two options in a standard Online Store 2.0 theme.

Option A: A dedicated page template (recommended)

  1. Go to Online Store > Themes > Customize.
  2. In the page selector, choose Pages > Create template, name it gift-guide.
  3. Add sections in this order:
  • Image banner with one line of copy and the shipping cutoff date.
  • Collection list showing your 4 to 6 recipient collections as tiles.
  • One Featured collection per recipient, 4 to 8 products each, with a "See all" link.
  • Rich text block for gift wrap, gift cards and returns policy.
  1. Create a page under Online Store > Pages, call it "Holiday Gift Guide", and assign the gift-guide template.

Keep the URL stable: /pages/gift-guide, not /pages/gift-guide-2026. You update the content each year, and the page keeps the links and authority it built last season.

Option B: The homepage takeover

For smaller stores, put the same sections directly on the homepage from Black Friday to December 20. Less work, but you lose a dedicated URL you can share in ads, emails and social posts. I would still create the page and link it from the homepage hero.

Make it findable

Add the page to the main menu (Content > Menus) as "Gift Guide", and add an announcement bar link. A gift guide nobody can find is just a nice page.

Step 4: Put the shipping deadline everywhere

The single most useful piece of information on a gift guide is the date. "Will it arrive in time?" is the question every gift buyer has.

For US stores, USPS recommended send-by dates for Christmas 2026 delivery in the lower 48 are Dec. 17 for Ground Advantage, Dec. 18 for Priority Mail and Dec. 19 for Priority Mail Express. Those are recommendations, not guarantees. Subtract your own processing time (usually 1 to 2 days in December) and publish your real "order by" date.

Show it in three places:

  • The gift guide banner.
  • The announcement bar.
  • The cart, next to the checkout button.

After the cutoff, do not delete the guide. Swap the hero for gift cards and digital products, which you can still deliver on the 24th. In KPMG's survey, gift cards were the second most cited gift choice at 48%, so that last-minute block is not a consolation prize.

Step 5: Raise the order value inside the guide

Gift buyers often buy for several people in one visit. Make that easy.

Gift sets and bundles

A ready-made "Coffee lover kit" is easier to choose than three separate products. Build 2 or 3 fixed gift sets per guide, or let people build their own with a mix and match bundle. Price them so the saving is visible but your margin holds.

Gift wrap as an add-on

Create a "Gift wrapping" product (a $4 to $6 price is common) and offer it as a checkbox or one-click add-on on the product page and in the cart. Add a gift message field using cart notes so the buyer can write the card.

Free shipping threshold and free gift

Shopify's 2025 BFCM average cart was $114.70. If your average order sits well below your free shipping threshold, a progress bar in the cart ("$12 away from free shipping") does a lot of work in December. A free gift above a threshold works too: here is how to set up a gift with purchase. An all-in-one app like ConvertX can handle the bundles, the cart progress bar and the gift add-on in one place, if you prefer not to stack several apps.

Step 6: Write copy that sells the gift, not the product

Product pages describe the item. Gift guide copy describes the moment.

  • Weak: "Ceramic pour-over set, 600 ml, matte black."
  • Better: "For the friend who talks about their coffee beans. Looks great on the counter, and they will use it every morning."

A few rules:

  • One sentence per product, max two.
  • Mention who it is for and why it works as a gift.
  • Show the price on the tile. Hiding it adds a click and kills trust.
  • Use badges sparingly: "Bestseller", "Ships by Dec 18", "Under $30".

Step 7: Mobile first, always

Most gift browsing happens on a phone, often from an email or a social post. Check your guide on a real phone before launch:

  • Collection tiles should be two per row, with readable labels.
  • The shipping deadline must be visible without scrolling.
  • Add to cart from the guide should not open three popups.
  • A sticky add to cart bar on product pages helps on long gift product pages.

Step 8: Launch timeline

When

What to do

Early November

Tag products, build collections, create the page template

1 week before Black Friday

Publish the guide, link it in the menu, email your list a preview

BFCM weekend

Feature the guide in the hero next to your offer

Early December

Send "gifts by recipient" emails, one persona per email

Your shipping cutoff

Switch hero to gift cards and local pickup

January

Unpublish from menu, keep the URL for next year

If you are still preparing the rest of your season, our Black Friday CRO checklist covers the six weeks around this launch.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Too many products. A guide with 200 items is a search problem, not a guide.
  • No prices visible. People shop by budget in December.
  • Out-of-stock items. Use the inventory condition on automated collections so they disappear.
  • A new URL every year. You throw away last season's backlinks.
  • No deadline. The buyer leaves to check Amazon's delivery dates and does not come back.
  • Hard-to-gift products up front. Lead with items that need no sizing and photograph well.

The bottom line

A holiday gift guide on Shopify is a small project: a few tags, four to six automated collections, one page template and a date in a banner. Done well, it turns "I have no idea what to get her" into a purchase in under two minutes. Start in early November, keep it short, show prices and delivery dates, and give buyers easy ways to add a second gift.
