llms.txt Shopify setup explained in plain terms: what the file does, whether it moves rankings, and the fastest way to add one without an app.

8.7% of the web's top 1,000 sites publish an llms.txt file. Among sites that are actually reachable, that number climbs to 15.8%. Shopify stores are barely part of that count. Should yours be one of them?
What llms.txt actually is
llms.txt is a plain text file, written in markdown, that sits at the root of your domain. Not your theme folder. Not your assets. The root: yourdomain.com/llms.txt. It lists what your business does, links to your most important pages, and gives an AI model a condensed map instead of forcing it to crawl and guess.
Think of it as a README for machines. A human visitor never sees it. A shopping agent from ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity might read it before it reads anything else on your site.
Does it move your Shopify SEO
No. Not directly. Google has never confirmed it uses llms.txt for ranking, and as of mid-2026 no major AI vendor has publicly confirmed guaranteed reads of the file either. That's the uncomfortable truth most guides bury in paragraph nine.
Here's what it does do. It complements your robots.txt and sitemap.xml rather than replacing them. It gives AI crawlers a faster, cleaner path to your key pages during AI search optimization efforts, which matters more every quarter as shopping agents start comparing products across stores automatically. Skipping it isn't a mistake. Ignoring the broader shift toward generative engine optimization is.
How to add llms.txt to Shopify
Three ways exist. Pick one, not all three.
Method 1, file upload plus redirect. Write your content as plain markdown, save it as llms.txt, and upload it through Shopify admin under Content, then Files. Copy the CDN URL Shopify gives you. Go to Online Store, Navigation, URL Redirects, and point /llms.txt at that CDN link. Test it in an incognito window before you call it done.
Method 2, a custom Liquid template. Under Online Store, Themes, Edit Code, create a new template called page.llms-txt. Paste raw markdown, no HTML wrapping. Add {% layout none %} at the very top or Shopify will wrap your plain text file in a full HTML theme, which defeats the entire purpose. Create a page using that template, then redirect /llms.txt to it.
Method 3, an app. At least eight llms.txt apps exist on the Shopify App Store right now, priced from free up to roughly $19 a month for auto-generation and hosting. Fine for stores that want zero manual maintenance. Overkill for a 40-product store that can write four paragraphs by hand.
The file that actually gets read is short, current, and honest. The file that gets ignored is an 8,000-line auto-generated product dump nobody curated.
What to put inside the file
Keep it under 50KB. Aim for 30 to 60 curated links, not your entire catalog. Include your business description, top collection pages, your return policy, shipping terms, and two or three flagship product lines. Write it like you're briefing a new employee, not writing ad copy. An AI agent doesn't care about your brand voice. It cares about facts it can trust and cite.
Skip the theme's marketing language entirely. That's a mistake nearly every early adopter makes once, then fixes.
Category | llms.txt adoption | Notes |
Technology | 36.4% | Highest of any category tracked |
Video streaming | 16.7% | Second highest |
Publishing | 14.3% | Content-heavy sites lead ecommerce here |
Social media / government | 0% | No tracked adoption as of the June 2026 scan |
What to prioritize if you're starting from zero
Write a four-paragraph plain text summary of your store, products, and policies before touching Shopify admin at all.
Use Method 2 if you're comfortable in the theme editor. It costs nothing and gives you the most control.
Cap your link list at 60. Curated beats comprehensive every time.
Re-check the file quarterly for dead links. A stale llms.txt is worse than none at all.
Don't pay for an app until you've outgrown a hand-written file. Most stores under $50k a month never do.
One file. Twenty minutes. Do it once, check it once a quarter.
