Klaviyo starts cheap. $20 a month, 500 contacts. Hit 10,000 contacts and the bill jumps to $150, a 650% increase for a list that only grew 20x. Klaviyo also caps monthly sends at ten times your contact count, so growth taxes you twice: more subscribers, and a tighter send ceiling per subscriber. Every Shopify store that scales past its first few thousand subscribers eventually opens an incognito tab and types "Klaviyo alternatives Shopify."

Klaviyo is excellent. Nobody disputes that. But for a store doing $3,000 to $15,000 a month, this is a budget conversation. Not a features one. The platform that's right for a $200,000-a-month DTC brand with a dedicated email manager is rarely the right starting point for a store still finding its first thousand customers.

Why Merchants Actually Switch

Not features. Not deliverability. Pricing. A review analysis of 300 Klaviyo customers found pricing complaints outnumber every other category combined: 39% of all negative mentions, 118 out of 300 reviews. Support issues came in second at 19% (58 mentions).

Reporting and attribution problems: 13% (38 mentions). Integration headaches: 12% (36 mentions). People don't leave because Klaviyo fails to work. They leave because the invoice outpaces the value they're getting out of it.

There's a second, quieter worry that shows up constantly in Shopify merchant forums: fear of locking into the wrong tool too early, then losing all that historical customer data when it's time to actually upgrade. That fear is mostly unfounded. Every platform in this article, Klaviyo included, imports contact history and purchase data on migration. The real risk isn't losing data. It's paying premium pricing for months while your list is still too small to generate the automation complexity that makes the premium worth it.

What the Alternatives Actually Cost

Here's the same workload, 10,000 contacts, priced across the platforms stores actually switch to.

Klaviyo

Brevo

GetResponse

MailerLite

Drip, Privy, and ActiveCampaign all land at or barely below Klaviyo's price once you hit 10,000 contacts. If you're switching purely to save money, cross them off immediately. A 1% discount isn't worth a full platform migration.

Shopify Email: The $0 Option Nobody Mentions First

Shopify Email costs nothing for your first 10,000 sends a month, then roughly $1 per additional 1,000. For a store under 1,000 customers sending two or three campaigns a month, that's effectively free. It lives inside your existing Shopify admin, pulls customer and order data automatically, and skips the integration setup that eats a weekend with any third-party tool.

The trade-off is real. Shopify Email's automation is basic: no predictive send-time optimization, no advanced branching logic, limited SMS. It's a starting point, not a destination. But starting at $0 while you're still validating product-market fit beats paying $20 a month for features you won't touch for six months. It's also the easiest tool to leave later, since your customer and order data already lives inside Shopify and doesn't need a re-import from some third-party CRM when you finally outgrow it.

The Four Worth Actually Considering

Four matter. The rest don't.

Brevo is the cheapest serious option at $32 a month. It started as a transactional email tool, which shows in its deliverability, and it bundles basic SMS marketing and a simple CRM into the same price. The catch: its ecommerce-specific automation, browse abandonment flows especially, is thinner than Klaviyo's. Fine under $20k a month in revenue. Limiting past that.

GetResponse sits at $79 a month, 47% cheaper than Klaviyo, and throws in landing pages and webinar tools most stores will never touch. Segmentation is solid. Predictive analytics, the kind Klaviyo uses to flag who's about to churn, isn't there.

MailerLite at $89 a month has the simplest interface of the group. If your current setup feels overwhelming, and for a lot of first-time store owners Klaviyo does feel overwhelming, this is the fastest to learn in a weekend. Fewer advanced triggers come with that simplicity.

Omnisend was built for ecommerce from day one. At $132 a month it's only 12% below Klaviyo, but it folds SMS and push notifications into the same plan and reports a $79 return per dollar spent across its paid-plan merchants in 2025. It also runs a 5 business day migration window with up to 35% smaller invoices for stores moving over with 250 or more contacts. Of the four, it's the closest like-for-like swap.

A powerful email platform with no customer data behind it is just an expensive dashboard. Build the list first. Upgrade the engine second.

How to Migrate Without Losing Your Flows

Export your segments first. Not your templates. Most merchants export their email designs and forget that Klaviyo's segment logic, the actual rules behind "customers who bought twice but not in the last 60 days," doesn't transfer automatically to a new platform.

Rebuild your top three flows manually: welcome, abandoned cart, post-purchase. Everything else can wait. Run both platforms side by side for one billing cycle before cancelling Klaviyo, so you're comparing real open rates and revenue instead of guessing.

Most migrations scoped this narrowly finish in under a week. The ones that drag on for a month are usually trying to rebuild fifteen flows at once instead of the three that actually make money. Keep a spreadsheet of which flow sent what, to whom, and when, so the comparison during that overlap month is based on numbers instead of a vague feeling that "the new one seems fine."

What You Give Up When You Downgrade

This part gets skipped in most comparison articles, so it's worth saying directly: cheaper tools are cheaper for a reason. Klaviyo's predictive analytics, the models that estimate churn risk and lifetime value per customer, don't have a real equivalent in Brevo or MailerLite. Its benchmarking data, which lets you compare your open rates against other stores in your exact vertical, is also unmatched. If your store already runs ten or more live automation flows, downgrading will cost you more in lost precision than it saves in subscription fees. The same goes for stores leaning hard on win-back campaigns targeting lapsed customers, since that's one of the areas where Klaviyo's prediction models are genuinely ahead of the budget tier.

The Budget Breakdown by Store Size

Under $5,000 a month in revenue: use Shopify Email or Brevo. Anything more sophisticated is solving a problem you don't have yet.

$5,000 to $20,000 a month: MailerLite or GetResponse. You have enough volume to justify basic automation, not enough to need predictive analytics.

$20,000 to $50,000 a month: Omnisend. The SMS bundling and ecommerce-specific flows start earning their keep here, and the gap to Klaviyo's price is only 12%.

Above $50,000 a month: this is usually where Klaviyo's predictive segmentation, benchmarking data, and advanced branching pay for themselves. Stop shopping for alternatives and negotiate your Klaviyo plan instead.

When Klaviyo Actually Earns Its Price

Email still outperforms everything else. Email marketing ROI averages $36 to $42 for every dollar spent industry-wide. Retail and ecommerce specifically average closer to $45. For comparison: SMS marketing returns $21 to $71 depending on list quality, SEO returns $7.50, and Google Ads returns $8.

That gap is why nobody's suggesting you skip email entirely, only that you pick the right tier of tool for where your list actually is. The channel is also still growing fast: email marketing revenue is projected to climb from $9.7 billion in 2024 to $37.5 billion by 2032.

Automated flows, a real welcome series, abandoned cart sequences, post-purchase emails, generate 37% of all email revenue while making up only 2% of total sends. The average email click-to-conversion rate across ecommerce sits at 27.6%. That ratio is where Klaviyo's predictive segmentation and branching logic start paying for themselves. Below roughly 5,000 to 8,000 contacts, most stores aren't running enough automation complexity to need it. Above that, with multiple live flows and a growing list, the math usually flips back in Klaviyo's favor.

What to Prioritize if You're Starting From Zero

Don't pick a platform first. The same logic that applies to choosing free vs paid Shopify apps across your stack applies here: match the spend to the stage you're actually in, not the stage you hope to reach by Q4.

  1. Get a popup or signup form live and start collecting emails before you touch automation. No list, no ROI, regardless of platform.

  2. Turn on one abandoned cart flow first. This single automation recovers more revenue than almost anything else you'll build in your first month.

  3. Add a welcome series once you cross 200 subscribers. Three emails is enough to start.

  4. Compare pricing at your projected 90-day contact count, not today's count. The platform that's free now might be your most expensive option by next quarter.

  5. Re-evaluate at 5,000 contacts. That's the point most budget tools start showing their limits, and the point Klaviyo starts looking reasonable again.

Pick one. Set it up this week. Measure for 30 days before adding a second flow.
