Best Shopify Apps for New Stores Under $10k a Month

The best Shopify apps for new stores under $10k a month aren't the ones with the biggest App Store ratings. Here's what to actually install, what to skip, and why.

All-in-one conversion app. Cart drawer, upsells, bundles, sticky cart, stories, payment icons, blocks and theme sections in a single app.

1.82% of Shopify stores spend more than $100 a month on apps. That's it. Not half. Not a third. Fewer than two in a hundred.

If you're running a new store under $10k a month in revenue and you've installed twelve apps already, you're not ahead of the curve. You're behind on judgment.

What stores your size actually spend

Stores under $1M in annual revenue spend between $50 and $300 a month on apps, running 3 to 5 tools total. That range sounds wide, but at $10k a month in sales (roughly $120k a year), you should be sitting near the bottom of it. Not the top. The average app costs $58 to $67 a month on its own, so three of those already puts you near $200. Add a fourth or fifth and you're eating 2 to 3% of revenue before you've paid for inventory or ads.

87% of merchants lean on apps to run their store day to day. That's not a debate worth having. The debate is which ones. The average Shopify merchant installs 6 apps, and plenty go up to 20 or 30.

That second number is where new stores get hurt. Every extra app is another script tag slowing your theme, another monthly charge, another thing that breaks during a Shopify update. App bloat is a real cost, and it shows up in page speed before it shows up in your bank statement.

Why "more apps" isn't the same as "more revenue"

There's a pattern that shows up in almost every new Shopify store's first six months. Someone opens the App Store, scrolls a "best apps to increase sales" list, and installs eight of them in a weekend. Three overlap. Two never get configured.

One slows the theme down enough that mobile load time crosses three seconds, and mobile visitors bounce before they see the product photos. This is not a hypothetical. It's the default outcome of shopping for apps the way you'd shop for groceries, one item at a time, with no cart total in view.

Compare that to a store that picks five categories, one app per category, and stops. Same functionality. Fraction of the monthly bill. Fraction of the things that can break.

The second store isn't smarter. It just decided on a budget before it started browsing, which is the one step most new merchants skip entirely.

The apps worth paying for at this stage

Five categories matter when you're small. Everything else is optional until you scale.

Email and SMS. This is non-negotiable. Klaviyo's free plan covers up to 500 profiles, which is plenty for a store doing $10k a month. Don't pay for email tools yet. You don't have the list size to justify it.

Reviews and social proof. A new store has zero trust. Reviews fix that faster than anything else you can install. Most review apps have workable free tiers below 50 to 100 orders a month.

Cart and upsell tools. This is where a bundled app pays off instead of stacking three separate ones. A tool like ConvertX rolls a cart drawer, a free shipping bar, and in-cart upsells into a single install instead of three separate monthly charges from three separate vendors. That's one line item instead of three, and one script tag instead of three.

Basic customer support. Shopify Inbox is free and handles the support volume of a store your size without issue. You do not need a $200/month help desk platform when you're getting 40 emails a week.

SEO fundamentals. A lightweight SEO app that handles meta tags and schema markup covers 90% of what you need. Save the enterprise SEO suite for when you have content to optimize at scale.

Trust and payment signals. A row of payment icons and a couple of trust badges near your buy button cost nothing to add through your theme editor, and dedicated trust badge apps exist if you want more control over placement and design. This is a five-minute fix with an outsized effect on a brand-new store that has no reviews and no track record yet.

Bundled apps vs. stacking point solutions

Here's the math nobody shows you when you're comparing individual app listings. Say you want a cart drawer, a free shipping progress bar, and an in-cart upsell slot. Buy those as three separate apps and you're often looking at $20 to $40 each, so $60 to $120 a month before you've added reviews or email.

Buy them as one bundled tool and the same functionality typically lands under $50 total. The savings aren't the only benefit. Three apps means three vendors' code loading on every page. One app means one.

That difference shows up directly in your Core Web Vitals score, which Google and Shopify both factor into how your store ranks and how fast it feels to a shopper on a train with two bars of signal.

This isn't an argument against every standalone app. A dedicated cart abandonment email tool that only does that one thing well is fine to run alongside a bundle. The argument is against paying for the same category three separate times because three different apps happened to look good in three separate App Store searches.

The mistake isn't installing apps. The mistake is installing apps priced for a store you don't have yet.

Free tools that outperform paid ones right now

Free plans exist for a reason. Over 40% of Shopify apps offer a free tier or trial specifically to get small merchants in the door. Shopify Inbox costs nothing and does the job. Klaviyo Free does the job. Native Shopify discount codes do the job.

You don't need Bold, Rebuy, or ReConvert-tier upsell platforms until you're running enough traffic that a 1% lift in AOV is worth hundreds of dollars a month, not tens.

One thing worth knowing before you install a trial: apps using an opt-out free trial model convert to paid at 48.8%, compared to 18.2% for opt-in trials. That's not a coincidence. It means half the apps that "started free" on your store are quietly billing you now because you forgot to cancel. Check your Shopify billing page today. Not next week.

What to skip until you cross $10k/month

Skip loyalty and rewards programs. They need repeat customer volume to pay for themselves, and a new store doesn't have that yet. Skip advanced personalization engines built for stores running $5,000+ a month in app spend alone.

Skip a dedicated A/B testing platform. You don't have the traffic for statistically valid tests. Run manual comparisons instead and trust your gut plus your conversion rate over a two-week window.

Skip stacking three separate point solutions when one bundled app covers the same ground. This is the single biggest lever new stores miss. Five apps at $40 each is $200 a month and five vendors to manage. One app at $30 to $50 covering cart, shipping bar, and upsells is a fraction of the cost and a fraction of the maintenance.

Skip fulfillment automation tools built for stores shipping hundreds of orders a day. If you're packing orders yourself or working with a single supplier, Shopify's native order management handles it. Skip a dedicated landing page builder too. Your theme's built-in page editor is enough until you're running paid traffic at a volume that justifies split-testing entire page layouts, not just headlines.

One more: skip currency conversion and multi-market apps unless you're already shipping internationally. They add checkout complexity for a shopper base you don't have yet, and that complexity has a cost measured in confused customers, not just dollars.

What about paid ads and pixel tracking apps

This is the one category where spending a little early actually pays off. A proper pixel and attribution app costs $20 to $50 a month and tells you which $1 you spent on ads actually turned into a $30 order. Skip this and you're running paid traffic blind, which is worse than not running paid traffic at all. This is the exception to "wait until you scale." Everything else on this list can wait. Attribution can't, the moment you turn on a single ad.

What to prioritize if you're starting from zero

  1. Install Klaviyo Free and Shopify Inbox first. Both cost nothing and cover email and support immediately.

  2. Add a reviews app on its free tier before you add anything else. Trust comes before conversion tactics.

  3. Pick one bundled cart and upsell app instead of three separate ones. Keep your app count under 5.

  4. Set a calendar reminder for every free trial you start. Cancel or commit, don't drift.

  5. Recheck your app stack every time your revenue doubles, not every time you see a new ad for an app.

Pick three. Install them this week. Measure your conversion rate in 14 days before you touch anything else.
